Part 3 of 3

No one likes to get scammed and it's no secret that there's lots of Fake traffic being sold on the Internet for web site targeted traffic. Unfortunately, the scammers have caused a lot of people to be skeptical or afraid of buying traffic at all. There is always the few who ruin it for everyone else, and even the legitimate Internet web site marketing services that provide traffic are deeply hurt in more ways than one by those that sell Fake traffic.

Everyone wants to increase site traffic. Some of you will try anything to do just that. You might even type into Google something like - advertise my business – just to get some ideas. Google then gives you pages of help sites including many websites where you can buy web site traffic. But be careful, you can buy website traffic that is fake without realizing it.

There is fake traffic online for most of the purchased traffic methods including PPC traffic. Even PPC (Pay Per Click) programs like Google Adwords are subject to abuse. Some unscrupulous people will busily click away on their competitors PPC ads to cause someone to lose a lot of money and possibly exiled by Google Adwords because they can’t pay their Adwords bill.  These scumbags want their competitors to drop their PPC campaigns, or want to try to put their competitor out of business.

They’ve also devised ways to abuse and generate fake traffic for Popunder / Popover generated traffic, Internet Banner Advertising, and Mass Email Marketing Campaigns. So the consumer must be aware of these possibilities and do what they can to protect themselves from traffic web site scams. Of course, there are a lot of good companies that do sell legitimate web site targeted traffic online. We know because we have tested and are still testing traffic generated by many methods. However, there are enough bad companies that will not hesitate to take your money and sell you fake traffic as well so the consumer must be cautious.

Spotting Fake Web Site Targeted Traffic

Fortunately however, it is not really difficult to spot some types of fake traffic. For example, one of the easiest types to examine and find out if it is genuine or fake traffic is Popunder / Popovers generated traffic. There are thousands selling this traffic online. This traffic to web site has been sold using many descriptions including some of the same descriptive names as other types of traffic that is legitimate, for example: targeted web site traffic, cheap traffic, website hits etc. So it is hard to tell what you are buying until you look more closely. This type of traffic is created when your site appears as a popunder or a popover to someone that is visiting another site. To tell if you had purchased fake web site targeted traffic instead the first thing you need to do is look at the stats your tracking system has provided. Use a tracking system that gives you the referring sites. It's important to see just where the traffic is coming from. If you had purchased Popover/ Popunder generated traffic you should use this method with every provider you purchase traffic from to spot fake traffic. By looking at the stats from your tracking system you can analyze the data by examining and following the IP addresses. If you find a lot of IP addresses that lead to no where or are anonymous addresses then the chances are you have Fake web site targeted traffic.

Also, look at the length of time of the visiting IP addresses. If they are visiting for almost the exact amount of time, then it's more than likely traffic that was created by bots. Some Internet web site marketing services use a Bot to automatically visit your page by using only a handful of IP addresses over and over to visit your page. I've seen traffic promotion companies using approximately 40 to 100 IP addresses; some fake traffic providers out there may use more, some may use less. Bots are scripts that will automatically do something without your help or presence.

Are You Using Traffic Promotion Services That Send You Traffic Produced By Bots?

There are also two other common bots (programs) used to increase sit traffic that you should be aware of. One bot will automatically refresh your page that is being shown to the visitor, and the other is a bot program that will view sites automatically (some call this auto-surfing). Sadly, these bot programs (scripts) really do exist and are far too common in the fake traffic world. The people who use these methods, of course, do not consider this "fake" traffic. In some cases, technically they may be right, however, in my opinion it is all unethical and not fair to their customers, because their customers are not getting web site targeted traffic or even "real" visitors that can or want to sign-up or buy from them. Both of these methods used will certainly result in you receiving very, very poor traffic as well:

Auto-refreshing. This traffic promotion trick is what I would definitely call unethical traffic. This fake traffic occurs when your advertised site is being delivered as a pop-up / pop-under and is being refreshed to show your URL every few seconds or so, therefore inflating the number of times the site has been seen by visitors because it is showing your page several times to the same visitor. In other words you are not getting “unique” real visitors.

Automatic visiting bot programs. They have been used by people that belong to groups like Traffic Exchanges and “paid to” programs that pay you a few dollars to visit a lot of websites. These companies that pay you to click on sites, banners, etc., sell this traffic to traffic wholesalers and resellers of traffic - like Redirected Traffic, Popup/Popunder generated traffic, and Banner placement programs, as well as, web site targeted traffic. Sadly, the people who use these bot programs have given all these traffic sources mentioned a bad rap. These bot programs dilute the real traffic and the result is very poor quality traffic to web site. Of course, there are more legitimate good resources of redirected traffic, popunder traffic, banner placement programs etc. than bad sources of traffic delivered by bot methods. Our estimate is about ¾ of the traffic sold by internet web site marketing services is legitimate generated traffic (whether it is good web site targeted traffic or not is another matter because there are a lot of legitimate traffic that produces poor results). However, there are enough bad traffic promotion sources online that uses bots to deliver traffic that you need to be aware of this possibility. This could have been the reason you received poor results from your purchased web site targeted traffic campaign.

Let me explain in more detail for those unfamiliar with Traffic Exchanges and “paid to” types of traffic programs. When you join a program like Traffic Exchanges and ‘Surf for pay’ programs they will pay you or reward you for visiting sites, and clicking banners. You are required to view a new website for so many seconds / minutes in order to build credits in a traffic exchange, or to get paid for visiting a website or click a banner. The majority of these members could care less about your site and are only interested in earning as many credits, or as much money as they can from these programs. So, people have developed scripts that are easily available to automate this process. Most of these scripts are totally hands free and will automatically visit websites while the member is doing something else, like watching TV, or whatever. These scripts come in real handy for some programs that you can join online that will pay members to visit sites, i.e. $1 for every 100 visits he makes. This traffic is sold to traffic wholesalers and resellers. I personally met someone who said he uses an automatic visiting bot while he is sleeping!

These “paid to” programs I have mentioned that pay individuals to click on websites, banners, and even read emails (well, at least open emails) are very common on the internet. Anyone can join and many are because they want to earn extra cash. They are called names like, “Get paid to”, “Pay to surf”, and other names. All this traffic to web site - the sites that are clicked, the banners that are clicked, and the emails that are opened – is sold to you as targeted traffic! The Internet web site marketing sites that sell this traffic state it will increase site traffic. But let me ask you, do you really want this kind of practically worthless traffic?

Most of these programs are free to join and some will even pay you a bonus to join. Many will require you to pay a fee to upgrade your membership – the biggest benefit being instead of getting paid $.01 to click on a site, they may pay you $.015 (1 and a half cents) to click. For reading emails (and hopefully not just opening and closing) they may also pay $.01 per email. Payments structures and rules all vary from program to program. Some will offer bonuses every so many clicks and most have a MLM tier structure for bringing in more members to click – they will pay you a fraction of what your downline earned for clicking away like mad men.

Internet web site marketing wholesalers of this traffic do not consider this fake web site targeted traffic. They believe that if they can get anyone to open your emails from your email campaign or click on your site or banners then this traffic could possibly turn into a sale or a sign-up. Their belief is that this is good traffic because their members are required usually to keep it open for 3 seconds to 1 minute and will possibly read it and take some kind of action during that time. We disagree with this strongly because everyone that is visiting these sites is paid to visit them. People join these programs to make some extra cash –not to spend it. They are not looking for a specific product or information of any kind and they certainly do not care what you have to offer. They joined the program they’re in simply to earn money! So the more sites they can visit the more they can earn. Most people in these programs can easily visit 100 sites in an hour and they do. Therefore, we have included this type of traffic to web site as “fake” traffic also.

How can you know if you are receiving this type of Fake targeted web site traffic? Unfortunately, this is the hardest type of Fake web site targeted traffic to spot. Some will openly tell you that this is how their traffic is generated others are a little more subtle. You might email them and just ask them outright if the traffic is generated from “paid to” take action programs. Perhaps they will be honest and tell you if the traffic comes from people that were “paid to click”. They might state something similar to this in their reply email or on their website: 'Our traffic comes from people who are new to internet marketing and looking for ways to make money... they join our program because we offer them a small incentive to perform task (a click action task) and visit your site (try your program).'

You could also look at your stats again to see how long they were visiting, however, that is no guarantee that the traffic was generated by “Get paid to” services. Checking time viewed for “paid to click” type of traffic should only be used as an additional indicator that it might possibly be this type of generated traffic.

Advertise My Business Without Selling Me Fake Traffic Please!!

You could also check on the Internet for companies that report scam and fraud sites to see if the company that you are about to purchase web site targeted traffic from has been known for Scams or Fraud or has had many complaints. There are many places online that report such sites. For example these sites have list of reported scam sites:
http://owninternet.googlepages.com/listofscam

http://wafflesatnoon.com/2009/01/10/scam-alert-website-list
http://www.scamreviewsites.com

You should develop your own list of sites that report scams by creating a file in your bookmarks and bookmarking them to the file for easy access. Then check to see if they have been reported as a scam site before you make a purchase of some kind to increase site traffic, or for anything really. To start creating your own bookmarked list type in keywords like: scam websites, scam list, or “fraud site list” or something similar.

Traffic Promotion Reviews

You could also inquire in Google or other search engines to see if there are any reviews available by typing in something like, site name+review. Or, you many check forums etc to see if there are any complaints. But a word of caution here - If you do this you must consider the source. The review or post may be by a competitor or a reseller or someone with a grudge. You never really know. So if you find only 1-3 complaints throughout the internet - take it with a grain of salt and only use their complaint as a caution (not a warning) - because every business will get someone that will complain if they are in business long enough. You can never please everyone – no matter what you do. Four complaints is the border line that I consider much more seriously – do they have anyone reporting anything positive anywhere on the internet? Five complaints I would definitely avoid.

How Do I Increase Site Traffic and Only Buy Web Site Traffic That Is Real and Targeted?

The bottom line here is Do Your Homework. Track and check your stats and analyze the data. See how long your pages are being viewed. If your website page is only open for mere seconds and your using popunder / popover traffic, or if there are a lot of repeat URL's in your stats, then you may have been sold fake web site targeted traffic delivered by bots. Trace and check some of the delivering sites and see if your page is a pop-over or pop-under as they claimed because it does make a difference in how many people will actually look at it. If the traffic Internet web site marketing service claims they deliver unique (visitor) traffic and you see in your stats that they are not 100% unique URL's as they claim, then you will have to decide whether it is worth sticking with depending on whether you get any sign-ups or a sale. You should be aware of where the web site targeted traffic is really coming from. Despite what the traffic promotion service’s website tells you, or hints at where it is coming from, ask the source, and look at your stats if you already purchased. Find and bookmark a few places on the internet to check if the business selling the traffic has been reported as a scam site or had many complaints.

One final point I would like to make. Always keep in mind that not all traffic methods for a specific service or product or sign-up campaign are equal. Meaning that some traffic methods work best for some products and services, and other traffic methods will work better for other products or services. I've tested this thoroughly and found this is a fact. If you’re Internet web site marketing campaign fails to get the traffic results you were hoping or they had advertised it would get don't immediately jump to the conclusion it was just terrible traffic from the traffic promotion service.

Look at the things above I have shown you to analyze first to see if it was fake targeted web site traffic. If the traffic gave you poor results, try using one of your other landing pages that has a different offer with the same traffic provider to see if the results are better because different methods of advertising work better for some products or services. You may just need to rewrite your existing landing page – testing your website copy could make a world of difference. Some landing pages just work better than others because of the way they were written (more enticing) with better headlines, better sales copy, or other factors. If both of those two things fail to improve results then test a different Internet web site marketing traffic service with that same landing page for your product or service. The traffic promotion service may be the reason but if the results do not improve significantly then you know it was not the traffic promotion service company that you had used.

Despite all the bad things I have said in this report about how some Internet web site marketing traffic services will scam you, remember not all traffic promotion service companies are bad. It's just a shame that the scammers and quick-buck artist have devised ways to taint this type of business. Keep in mind, that poor results from a campaign to increase site traffic does not in itself mean you have bought Fake traffic. In all fairness to legitimate traffic promotion services, try to always remember that there could have been several reasons for not getting good results from it. An entire book could be written on the reasons why you are not getting sign-ups or sales; in fact I was going to write one myself :o )
